How Long to Keep Saniderm on Tattoo

If you want to ensure that your tattoo is long-lasting and vibrant you should take better care of it. Why? Because getting a tattoo is easy but its care is difficult. And if not handled right, you run the risk of getting infections.

When we speak of tattoo aftercare, Saniderm comes on top of the list. This waterproof yet breathable medicated bandage goes hand in hand with tattoo aftercare. Moreover, it is precisely designed for the tattoo so it works better than any other bandage out there.

But one question around Saniderm is how long can you keep it on? Here is everything you should know!

Tattoo Aftercare with Saniderm

There are some rules for aftercare with saniderm:

  •  You should apply for Saniderm for at least 8 hours but a 24-hour application is best. Apart from that, you can keep it on your tattoo for up to 6 days. In a nutshell, the extended application of Saniderm ensures better healing.
  • Sometimes the Saniderm comes off earlier than expected due to this fluid. So if you see that your Saniderm is coming off you should replace it. Apart from that, the Saniderm helps skin to heal faster by retaining the plasma and skin.
  • the initial 24 hours of the tattoo work are critical and you must remove the initial Saniderm film after 24 hours for cleaning and moisturizing. When you change the first bandage after tattoo work you should put on an aftercare product that your tattoo artist recommended. And again put a Saniderm bandage on the tattoo. Now this Bandage can go for as long as 6 days but not more than that.

What if My Saniderm Comes Off Early?

You should keep on the Saniderm for at least 24 hours after the tattoo. However, if you take a shower after getting a tattoo or somehow the Saniderm starts to pull up from the tattoo you should cut the peeled Saniderm and apply a new one on the exposed part.

Saniderm Application–How to Apply it Perfectly?

Applying saniderm is straightforward. You should of the following:

  • Before applying saniderm clean the tattoo area. You should also remove excessive hair around the tattoo area.
  • Get your saniderm bandage and cut it as per the size of your tattoo. Make sure you leave some an inch extra. Also, cut the corners round so it won’t come off soon.
  • Now expose the adhesive side of the bandage.
  • Put its center on the tattoo and gently spread it out on all tattoos. Use light pressure on the bandage to ensure there are no air bubbles under it.
  • Now remove the plastic wrap of the bandage too. You can leave this bandage for 24 hours.

How To Remove Saniderm?

There is no rocket science behind Sanderm removal. You should to the following:

  1. Sanitize your hands first to minimize infection risk.
  2. Look for the edge of a bandage to safely pull back the bandage.
  3. If the Saniderm is coming off on its own, it’s good. However, if you want to change it and it’s not coming off easily apply warm water over it. If not you can put a damp towel on it for a while unless its bind becomes loose.
  4. Make sure to pull the bandage in the hair growth direction. Don’t be harsh in pulling the bandage instead gently pull it. You can also remove it in a warm shower.

How To Apply Saniderm Again on the Tattoo?

If you removed the Saniderm and want to apply it again do the following:

  1. Clean your hands first. After that wash your tattoo with an Antibacterial unscented soap.
  2. Rinse the tattoo with lukewarm water and let it air dry or pat dry the tattoo.
  3. Make sure all the buildup and plasma are not there on the tattoo.
  4. Apply a moisturizing lotion ointment or aftercare product on the tattoo however these are not a must. If you have dry skin or irritation you can apply them.
  5. Now as we mentioned earlier, in the application of saniderm you can do the same steps.

Can you over moisturize a tattoo?

Unfortunately, you can not over moisturize a tattoo and it can be the reason for many problems. For instance, over-moisturizing can be a breeding ground for germs and bacteria.

Moreover it can also hinder the healing process. And worst of all it can block the pores and make for skin problems. Now that for the over moisturizing. Can you moisturize your tattoo too? Yes, you can under moisturize it and it will also be a problem.

Why? Because you will end up with dry and cracked skin. So to get perfect moisturizing you should apply a thin layer on the tattoo and make sure it covers all the tattoo skin.

Can I Wear Saniderm while Showering, Swimming and Exercising?

Can I Wear Saniderm while Showering, Swimming and Exercising

It is better to keep your Saniderm-ed tattoo off of water in the initial recovery phase. There are few reasons to not indulge in water activities:

  1. Submerging in water will weaken the adhesive and you will end up with a falling bandage.
  2. The germs and contaminants in the water might lead to the infection.
  3. If you are showering with hot water it will irritate the skin.

So it is better to keep your tattoo dry.

Can I cure a tattoo infection at home?

If you get a tattoo infection don’t take it for granted and take care of it as soon as possible. You should look for the signs of an infected tattoo, which are:

  • Swelling in the surrounding area of tattoos.
  • Painful sensation around the tattoo.
  • Redness in the area.
  • The high temperature of the infected area

First, I recommend heading to a doctor as soon as possible. However, if you can’t get to the doctor then you should take antibiotics. Not only that, but you should also apply antibiotic cream on the tattoo.

Tattoo Aftercare Tips

It doesn’t matter whether you use a Sandierm or any other bandage tattoo aftercare is a must. Here are some tips for better tattoo aftercare:

  • When you remove your first bandage you should exercise the tattoo cleaning protocol. As I mentioned earlier, cleanse your hand and gently clean the tattoo using an unscented soap.
  • Pat dry the tattoo and make sure you have loose clothes on to avoid unnecessary contact with the tattoo.
  • Your tattoo healing period is around two weeks (more or less). In this healing period make sure your tattoo doesn’t encounter dirt, moisture, or sunlight.
  • You can clean it once or at most twice a day but not more than that.  Otherwise, you will extend its healing time.
  • Applying moisturizer or ointment is a must for the dry skin. Moreover, when you see scabs on the tattoo you should apply moisturizer. Moisturize the tattoo (with scabs) two to three times.
  • Once you see the tattoo scabs don’t pick them up, let the scabs get off on their own. Moreover, tattoo itching is also common but don’t scratch it off.
